Forensics and Glitter

Science is everywhere! No matter what we do, there is science behind it. This is the message which was enthusiastically communicated to more than 900 first year secondary school students nationwide at Challenge Science, Junior Achievement’s interactive hands on science road show, supported nationally by Discover Science & Engineering.

Challenge Science took place in Sligo IT, Tallaght IT, Galway IT, Limerick IT, Waterford IT and the National Maritime Cork Institute (NMCI) and was generously supported regionally by Accenture, GECAS, Genzyme and Pepsico.

“The aim of Challenge Science is to excite young people both about science as a subject and about pursuing it as a future career. Our volunteers, from our sponsor organisations, are wonderful role models and deliver the workshops with a great sense of the fun, wonder and discovery inherent in science,” explained Clodagh Maguire, Marketing and Communications Director.

Students were set a number of complex scientific challenges in the form of hands-on experiments and activities. For example, they solved a crime using forensic tests and carried out an experiment to show how infection spreads using glitter! The students also competed in a treasure hunt quiz on famous scientists’ career profiles.
