This innovative programme is delivered to primary school students from DEIS schools. The students participate in hands-on experiments and interactive workshops hosted at a third level institute. The Science Forward launch got off to a fantastic start in Cork, with 160 students from 5 local primary schools participating. It was kindly hosted by UCC and delivered by volunteers from Bord Gáis Networks. The programme will roll out over the course of term 1 2011 to Limerick, Galway/Mayo and Dublin.

Science Forward aims to inspire an interest in science so that the 6th class students participating seriously consider science when making subject choices for post-primary school. Over the course of the two days students did tests to discover how their brains work, learned all about the importance of CSI techniques and even built their own hovercrafts.

John Barry, Managing Director, Bord Gáis Networks said 'Bord Gáis Networks is delighted to lead this programme with Junior Achievement in providing participating students with a fundamental understanding of the general everyday application and importance of science as well as the critical role it plays in ensuring a sustainable future. Science and engineering are very much at the core of our business and it is in this regard that we support many science related educational programmes but also as a corporate citizen in promoting the value of education."
